Amagezi Education Centre

A photo of the entrance to the Amagezi Education CentreSoft Power Education has been supporting the Ugandan Government in working towards the Millennium Development Goals for the Primary Education Sector. Working with rural primary schools, we have also created a complementary learning environment for pupils based at the Amagezi Education Centre (AEC). Pupils from 26 partner schools visit the Centre throughout the academic year and enjoy practical, interactive and hands-on learning session using equipment they do not have access to in school. We are now also extending the use of the centre to enable opportunities for adult learning.

AEC's Misson

"To enhance the knowledge of life skills through fun, creative, innovative and hands on education"

The Centre, situated in Jinja, opened in February 2007 and is a pioneering educational facility with a dual focus:

  1. Enabling schools to meet needs brought about by Universal Primary Education (UPE)
  2. Building the capacity of local communities to tackle poverty

2009 has seen some exciting developments at the Amagezi Education Centre with the addition of a new building (above left) to house bigger offices and a library, an extended ICT lab, a new and improved Endowoza Arts Centre and the biggest thing of all - the centre has been connected to electricity! This was possible thanks to the $10,000 we were given for winning the Entrepreneurship in Education Award in 2008. Our poor solar power could no longer keep up with the increased number of computers in the lab and office!

Video

This short video was made by some very good friends of ours and has enabled us to spread the word about the Amagezi Education Centre as well as to assist us with fundraising applications. The video will give you a good idea of how the centre works. (To watch this video externally, click here.)

Projects

The core value of the AEC is that access to learning and information holds the key to individual and community development, and should be available to all. Two years of research and consultation within schools and local communities, together with the results from numerous pilot projects, has culminated in the final development of educational and capacity building projects. Each project is designed to contribute towards enabling communities to break the cycle of poverty in which they are living.

The main focus of the Amagezi Education Centre is the Primary School Pupils Project, but several Community Development Programmes are also run through the centre. Click on the links below to see details of each project
