Aim
- To build the capacity of young school leavers in the community
- To develop their practical / vocational skills in carpentry
- To provide practical employment based skills
Rationale
- Early school leavers have little or no employment based skills
- Comprehensive carpentry training is a life skill and a tool for development
- Providing a practical skill will empower young people and increase employment and/or income generating opportunities
Actions needed
- Organise an experienced carpenter as a teacher
- Provide year long training for 3 youths in the community
- Training to comprise of 4 intensive 3 week courses per year and in between provide training one full day per week
- Provide equipment and wood for the classes
Timescale
- 3 students chosen at the beginning of each year
- 4 intensive training sessions will take place in the periods April/May, August/September, December and January
- Teaching session will take place weekly during session time
Evaluation
- Three young community members taught per year in carpentry skills
- Carpentry produce and skills to a standard of being able to generate income
- Follow up monitoring of use of training to participants after one year
