Job Description: Specialist Teacher – Maternity Cover

Overall description:

Soft Power Education is an education-focused NGO working in Jinja and Buliisa Districts in Uganda. Founded in 1999, SPE has grown enormously and has three areas of focus aimed at improving the quality of life through education: Alternative Education (Pre-Schools, Amagezi Education Centre, and Special Educational Needs); School Infrastructure; and Livelihoods.

 

The Specialist teacher delivers an array of teaching and lessons to children with special education needs. The specialist teacher works with children with a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, communication and physical disabilities. The specialist teacher adapts general education lessons and teaches them in a play-oriented manner. They are also responsible for teaching basic skills, such as, Activities of daily living, literacy and communication techniques.

 

Key areas of responsibilities:

1.       Develop programmes of learning activities

2.       Plan, prepare and deliver specialist teaching to children

3.       Adequately manage teaching and other resources

4.       Liaise with other stakeholders on related tasks

5.       Undertake administrative work as required by/in the position

6.       To assist with any other reasonable requests.

 

Responsibilities and activities

1.       Develop programmes of learning activities

  • Assess learners’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans.
  • Adapt lessons to meet the needs of learners.
  • Develop Individualised Education Programs (IEPs) for each learner.
  • Adequately place each learner in the SEN class, taking into account their abilities and difficulties.

 

2.       Plan, prepare and deliver specialist teaching to children

  • Plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each learner’s abilities
  • Teach and mentor learners as a class, in small groups, and one-on-one
  • Implement IEPs, assess learners’ performance, and track their progress
  • Continually identify learning needs and adequately respond to them
  • contact and teaching time with learners on an individual, class or small group basis
  • checking and assessing learners’ work and giving feedback
  •  

3.       Adequately manage teaching and other resources

  • Enumerate, use and safety keep all learning and teaching aids
  • Make use of  special facilities and/or equipment
  • Repair or report any damages on the learning and teaching materials
  • Periodically research on effective use of specific learning materials
  • Advise management on resource availability, needs and usage for effective stock-taking, restocking and, procurement

 

4.       Liaise with other stakeholders on related tasks

  • Attend all designated meetings and reviews
  • Liaise with parents, professionals and external agencies
  • Mentor SPE staff and other stakeholders in management of SEN learners
  • Actively participate in other SPE activities and trainings

 

5.       Undertake administrative work as required by/in the position

  • Write all activity reports, programme briefs and any other documentation as may be required by SPE
  • Coordinate the work of other staff in their absence
  • Write child performance reports
  • Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect learners’ progress and goals
  • Prepare and help students transition from grade to grade and after graduation

 

6.       To assist with any other reasonable requests.

  • To support other SPE programmes as shall be requested from time to time, as long as the programmes/ activities are in one’s ability, skills and reach
  • Adhere to SPE policies and procedures
  • Keep up to date with all SPE projects to allow effective communication with potential clients and stakeholders

 

The applicant must have:

  • Teaching certificate and/or a Diploma in Special Needs Education, Community Based Rehabilitation or Mobility and Rehabilitation
  • Resident in Jinja in Jinja
  • Excellent written English
  • Excellent organisational and IT skills
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, plan ahead, and problem solve and meet deadlines
  • Relevant work experience in a similar position with an NGO or school
  • A keen interest in developing new skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven experience in working with children with learning disabilities

 

SPE is looking to recruit for this position as soon as possible to allow for a smooth transition and handover from the current specialist. Interviews will take place in Jinja, Uganda in the week of 6th March 2017
