“Target communities are empowered through inclusive and diverse educational initiatives and increased opportunities to be engaged in practical, sustainable interventions”
Soft Power Education Strategic Objective One
Soft Power Education’s small scale women’s knitting cooperative is based in rural Bujagali, the heart of the Jinja district’s tourism industry. Each afternoon, the group meet with needles in hand to work on a range of beautiful, hand-knitted items, including our incredibly popular animal range. Every penny raised from the sale of these knitted animals goes back into the group, either as direct profit or to purchase more materials to secure future sales. This ensures our ladies can provide for themselves a sustainable livelihood and brighter future for their families.
The knitting group was founded by an ex-volunteer (and now trustee) with a passion for knitting! Mag visits Uganda at leasts once a year, bringing with her new wool, needles and patterns that have been donated directly or purchased from kind monetary donations. A seasoned knitter, Mag is always checking in with the group, although as they grow and improve each week, she is now learning more from them!
“Give a man a fish, and you will feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you will feed him for a lifetime”.
Each animal is hand knitted with love by one of our ladies, which means no two are the same and each had their own unique quirks!
The knitted animals can be purchased from our Jinja office and at various retailers throughout Jinja town. We are also able to ship the animals worldwide. To purchase a product, or to donate to the knitting group, contact us.
